FIFA World Cup 2026 is the biggest World Cup in the history of the sport: 48 teams, 104 matches, spread across 16 host cities in three countries — the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The tournament runs June 11 through July 19, 2026, and if you are reading this in April 2026, you are at the last reasonable booking window before prices go vertical.

We track airfare for a living. Here is exactly what you need to know about finding cheap flights to every 2026 World Cup host city — and when to stop waiting and just book.

The State of World Cup 2026 Fares Right Now

In April 2026, fares to most Group Stage host cities are still findable at tolerable prices for US domestic travelers. International fares are elevated but not yet at peak-event extremes. This is the window.

Starting 6-8 weeks before the Group Stage opening (June 11), fares to US host cities will spike sharply as casual fans and last-minute bookers flood the market. The Final at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on July 19 is already the most expensive destination in the tournament — LAX fares for the week of the Final are at a different tier from everything else.

The time to book is now. Not "soon." Now.

How to Get Cheap Flights to World Cup Host Cities

1. Search Now and Set Price Alerts

The most important step is starting your search today. Use our flight comparison tool to check current prices for your target destination, then set a price alert so you know immediately if fares drop before you commit.

2. Be Flexible on Exact Dates

Flying in 2 days before your match and leaving the day after is ideal — but if you have any flexibility, mid-week departure days (Tuesday and Wednesday) consistently produce lower fares than Thursday-Sunday around major events. Even a one-day shift can save $80-150 on a domestic fare.

3. Check Nearby Airports Seriously

This works best in multi-airport metros:

  • New York/NJ matches: EWR and JFK both serve MetLife Stadium — check both, always. Price gap can be $100+.
  • Miami matches: FLL (Fort Lauderdale) is 30 miles north of Miami with Uber/Lyft access; regularly $50-100 cheaper than MIA.
  • San Francisco matches: SFO, OAK, and SJC all feed into the Bay Area. OAK in particular is often cheaper.
  • Boston matches: Providence (PVD) is 50 miles south and served by Southwest; worth checking.
  • Los Angeles (Final): LAX is the venue airport but also the most expensive. Burbank (BUR) and Long Beach (LGB) are closer to SoFi Stadium than many people realize.

4. Consider Positioning Flights

If you are not near a major hub, it can be worth flying to a hub city the night before and connecting to your World Cup destination. For example: flying from a mid-size Midwestern city into Atlanta (ATL) the night before, staying one night, then taking an early morning flight to your match city the next day. This often unlocks better fares on the hub leg and gives you more airline options for the second leg.

5. For Mexican Host Cities: Book Directly or via US Hubs

Flights to MEX, GDL, and MTY from US cities are operated by American, United, Delta, Southwest, and the Mexican carriers Aeromexico and Volaris. Volaris in particular runs very competitive fares on US-Mexico routes — compare them even if you have airline status with a US carrier, as the price gap can justify paying for a checked bag separately.

The Final and Semifinals: Plan Now

The Final — SoFi Stadium, Los Angeles (LAX), July 19, 2026. This is the most expensive event in the tournament by a significant margin. Flights to LAX for the week of July 19 are already at elevated prices and will continue rising. If there is any scenario where you might be able to attend the Final, book a refundable or flexible fare to LAX now and decide later.

Semifinals — MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, NJ (EWR/JFK). The largest soccer stadium in the US hosts the semifinals. New York/New Jersey metro hotel and flight prices during semifinal windows will approach Final-level pricing given the size of the market and international visitor concentration.

Budget Breakdown: What a World Cup Trip Actually Costs

Typical US Domestic Match Trip (3 nights, 1 match)

Category Budget Range
Round-trip domestic flights $200 – $600
Hotel (3 nights, downtown) $400 – $900
Match ticket (Group Stage, resale) $300 – $800
Food and drinks $150 – $300
Ground transport (MARTA/Uber/transit) $50 – $100
Total estimate $1,100 – $2,700

Typical International Trip (5 nights, 1-2 matches)

Category Budget Range
Round-trip international flights $800 – $2,500
Hotel (5 nights) $700 – $1,500
Match tickets (1-2 games, resale) $600 – $1,600
Food, transport, activities $300 – $600
Total estimate $2,400 – $6,200

These ranges are wide because they cover the full spread of host cities, seat categories, and timing. Atlanta, Kansas City, and Dallas/Fort Worth tend toward the lower end for domestic travelers. Los Angeles for the Final, New York/NJ for the semifinals, and any late-tournament match will push toward the top of the range.

Our Recommendation: Book Flights This Week

We have watched airfare patterns for every Super Bowl, Champions League Final, and major sporting event of the past decade. The pattern for World Cup 2026 is following the same curve: a manageable booking window right now, followed by a sharp fare spike starting in May as the tournament approaches, followed by eye-watering last-minute prices the week before matches.

You do not need perfect certainty about your plans to benefit from booking now. Many airlines and booking platforms offer flexible or refundable fares — book a cancellable fare now at current prices, then either keep it or adjust as plans solidify.
